The studio practice of Los Angeles-based artist Dianna Molzan poses questions like, “Why does a painting, an object made of wood and textile and metal fixtures, conventionally ignore the materials of its own construction”? In Molzan’s work, paint, canvas and wood are the starting point for a deeper investigation of the medium that both upends and embraces traditional forms of painting as a means to speak about larger cultural norms and customs. With an additive approach that is concerned with style as much as formal experimentation, Molzan’s paintings –often referred to as painting-objects– create unexpected visual experiences that are essentially abstract and yet often deadpan in their depiction of everyday objects. In this Untitled work, the canvas is constructed and filled (with other canvas strands) in order to look like a decorative pillow, while on the bottom part of the painting, the canvas is unraveled into the lower fringes, creating an object that may be difficult to define in concrete terms, and still incredibly graceful.
